Holt hates the car
Yes, it's true, a baby that doesn't like driving in a car, a baby that doesn't fall asleep the instant the car starts to move over those gentle and soothing bumps in the road...
Siena loved the car... As soon as we got going she was out like a light, never waking up until she had a solid nap.
Holt on the other hand, absolutely hates going anywhere in the car... The second he's in the car seat he starts making noises like "uuuuuuuuhhhhh, uuuhhhhhh" like he's so anxious about the car, maybe he doesn't trust my driving and is just panicking the whole time "THIS LADY DOESN'T EVEN SLEEP AT NIGHT BECAUSE OF ME AND NOW SHE'S GOING TO DRIVE ME SOMEWHERE???!
! HOLY SHIT SAVE MEEEEEE!!!!!" As soon as we start to drive then he starts to scream, like really scream, like no-breathe-cry and tears, real tears streaming down his face... It's so sad :( I don't know if it's because he can't see us or he's uncomfortable, or too hot, or just genuinely hates driving!
Whenever we drive anywhere it is always planned around when he is going to be sleeping... But typically, we try to avoid driving long stretches unless we know there are minimal traffic lights and NO traffic jams because stopping the car mid sleep will most certainly wake him up and put him into a spiral cry.
This brings me to some interesting tactics of late...
When we did our California trip, we flew (no long trips in a vehicle allowed) but of course we did have to do some driving. Driving in LA is a nightmare if you commute to and from pretty much any surrounding area of the city, or within the city. If you've seen the Californian's skit from SNL about Californian's it is actually true... People who live in LA or Hollywood talk to you about times to travel and which highways to take... "Take the 5 to the 10, then get on the PCH and take that to Malibu" etc... and of course don't go anywhere between the hours of 7am to 10am or 3pm to 5pm because you'll get stuck in a grid lock that has no purpose except for everyone in LA owns at least 4 cars, and they're somehow driving them all at once!
You can imagine that we did get stuck in a little traffic here and there in spite of our best efforts to avoid it completely, it's impossible, there's a lot of stop and go happening anywhere in California... Even on a random highway that you would think would be abandoned at 2:00 in the afternoon... it's not, it's bumper to bumper!
So picture this... I am sitting in between two car seats in our white rental sedan, Siena is watching Dumbo with the volume cranked, Kyle has some spanish radio station on and Holt is screaming, LOUD LOUD LOUD. So what do I do?! We are stuck in traffic and won't be home for at least 40 minutes... Whip the boob out and squeeze some milk into a bowl of baby cereal, mix it up and feed it to him... Okay, that doesn't work... still screaming! So next step is to use the sippy cup... So as I'm pumping my breast into a tiny baby sized sippy cup I have to watch the windows and people driving by, so I have one leg up to block the right window and my head turned to watch the left, and there are A LOT of SUV's in LA, so you can imagine I have to keep stopping and acting like there's nothing strange happening as some random person (the 50th) drives by in a Cadillac Escalade!
Then just last week we were in Victoria visiting my family and I had forgotten our bag of clothes in Vancouver (I packed so meticulously too) so we had to go somewhere affordable to pick up a new Nutcracker outfit for Siena, as my mom and I were taking her in a few hours! We head to SS (Superstore) and Holt sleeps all the way there, but we are there for about half an hour with him in his stroller asleep as big sister argues with us about what SHE wants to buy... He wakes up in the car about two minutes into the ride home... SCREAMING. It kills me to hear it, and I know it's distracting for Kyle driving and my mom just keeps saying "aw, I hate hearing him cry like that, it's just awful!!" So I go to extreme measures to soothe him... Yes, I lean over the car seat and he gets on with it, no problem, not a challenge at all for this little man! Keep in mind we didn't have the car seat base in, and keep in mind that my mom said "thank god you have long boobs... they're going to be on the floor when he's done with them haha!" oh, thanks for reminding me mom :(So he goes to sleep again and I try to escape the latch but yet again he screams, this is giving me a permanent back injury and making me wonder about bottle feeding, So he grabs my boob and stuffs it in his mouth... He means business.
This kid literally dreams about my boob... When he sleeps he does the sucking motion the whole time he's asleep and when he wakes up it's the only thing that soothes him back to sleep... He has boobdar, much like Siena did at this age!
