"My baby sleeps through the night!"

If this is you, I hate you! I apologize but every time someone tells me that their baby sleeps through the night I wonder what could possibly be wrong with mine! I have to say though, love when people post on facebook "he slept through the night again last night!" then two weeks later "I didn't get any sleep last night..." If your baby miraculously sleeps right through, it probably won't last! There is always teething, or the sniffles, or a fever to come and rain on your parade!
I haven't had a good night of sleep since before Sienna was born, in fact I haven't had a good night of sleep since before I got pregnant. There's something about being pregnant (fear, weird dreams, anticipation, side sleeping, big belly, husband goes out for a drink and you think he has gotten into a bar fight or been hit by a bus if he is five minutes late etc, etc...) that really hinders your ability to sleep! It always annoyed me when I was constantly given the advice "sleep while you can! Once the baby arrives you will never sleep again!" I really wish I had listened to this advice... although there were a few days where I would go to bed at 7pm and wake up at 9am for breakfast, go back to bed until noon, have lunch, go back to bed until Ellen and Oprah... So I did sleep a bit more than normal, however I still wish I had slept more!
Once Sienna was born I was utterly exhausted! I remember the first night in the hospital, I was holding her once we had got into our room and I could barely keep my eyes in focus as I hadn't slept properly in days (5 days of contractions will do that to you)... Of course after a couple of hours of sleep (seemed like a couple of seconds) a nurse would come in and turn on all the lights and attach Sienna to me and tell me what I was doing wrong with nursing, then two hours later another nurse would tell me a different technique... What a complete shock these moments can be! Now I know for the next one, leave hospital as soon as the baby is out! Sorry, trailed off there for a minute!
Anyway I am still nursing Sienna and she is still waking for night feeds... Luckily she is curled up right next to me which makes this a little easier, but she only wakes for a five second feed and passes out, meanwhile I am wide awake for an hour!
Last night we tried something different! Kyle slept in between Sienna and I and when she woke up at 1am he cuddled her back to sleep, she then slept until 5am, and then back to sleep until 9am after a quick feed and Kyle moving back into the blocker position! I feel very rested today and will definitely try this maneuver again this evening!
Thank you genius husband!

  1. For a while I used to wake up before Adessa did in the middle of the night, expecting her to wake me up for a feeding. I would wake up at 2 and at 6, even though she wouldn't. So I would wake up and look at her dead asleep next to me and then get up and and be awake for almost an hour, just to fall asleep and be woken up shortly after! It took me weeks to stop doing that.

  2. Tell me about it!!
I always wake up and look at her thinking "any minute now...." then as soon as I am about to drift off.... she wakes up! I can't wait until she is actually sleeping a bit longer... maybe it will happen when she is 5! lol!
